Look Up

I think social media can make you happy, depressed, excited, depending on how you use it. Social media today has trained us to get our self-esteem and gratification through the amount of likes and followers we have. It has taught us the first we need to do is check our phones instead of soaking in the fact we woke up today. Social media makes it seem like we must follow the trends, styles, and everything else going on or we’re weird. Social media makes our lives seem like we have nothing without it.

Of course, social media has its good things. Connecting people in ways never thought possible before. It has opened many outlets for certain people, net-working, relationships, friendships, bla, bla.
BUT, I personally believe life would be a little better off without all the social media things we have going on today. We wouldn’t compare ourselves, we wouldn’t hide behind our phones, we wouldn’t be so distracted and addicted to media/our phones that we’d notice the things and people around us. We’d live in the present, we’d be mindful, we’d communicate with our mouths and speak to actual humans, and just genuinely enjoy life.

While I was living abroad, I didn’t have data and therefore could only use my phone on wifi and it was one of the best “inconveniences” that could have happened. Of course, I still took pictures of everything, but I was also able to notice and appreciate everything around me. I could live life, meet new people, be in the present, I felt feel and happy. Still to this day I try not to be on my phone too much, it feels better than constantly checking it and seeing all the crappy things going on around us.
