    • Changes to an environment or entity due to powers of others and possibly self.
  • Team Green:  Connor, Arael, Mariam, Brittany, Joshua
    • *A change in attitude, behavior, or cognition that is experienced in response to a stimulus (media).*
  • Team Orange: Hailee, William, Barbara, Rahele, Jatarrion
    • An attitude change that is a result of an action
  • Team Yellow: Kaity, Tahesin, Alex, Nick, Connie
    • Media effects are different ways that media can attempt to influence or affect the consumer. These can be positive effects, like an environmental commercial influencing you to recycle more, negative effects, like a political news segment that tries to outrage the viewers, or they can leave you with a more neutral effect. These effects leave an impression with the consumer regardless. By viewing/reading/consuming a form of media you automatically have an opinion of it, even if it’s insignificant, and it affects you.
  • Team Red: Liz, Rob, Nicole, Eric, Michael
    • Effects are the consequences and after results of what happens due to the media sending messages or just communicating. It is an attitude or behavioral change that happens as a result of an action. Examples: The President tweeting something stupid, the tweet spreading everywhere, and people reacting crazy as a result. Someone watching a murder on TV, and going out and copying the murders tactics or watching a murder on TV and not caring about the life being lost. Because shootings have become a social norm, people have become desensitized towards the mass effect.
  • Team Blue: Amina, Hunter, Jennifer, Halima, James
    • A planned or unplanned notion to stimulate attitudes and behavior from an individual resulting from an action.

Competition # 2:
Winner: Team Red: Liz, Rob, Nicole, Eric, Michael
  • Team purple:  Jesse T., Alisha S., Josh M, Marco S
    • “Wow, ____ is sexy” effect- the sexualization of things that are not supposed to be sexualized. For example, mlp, video game characters, movie characters, weapons. This mainly comes from tv and movies where they sexualize a lot of things to bring more viewers.
  • Team Green:  Connor, Arael, Mariam, Brittany, Joshua
    • "Receipt Theory" - The rise in the use of smartphones with screenshotting capabilities has led to an increasing number of everyday citizens recording the words and actions of public figures as well as their own friends and family members, thus holding them accountable. As a side-effect, people tend to exercise more restraint on and off of social media if they believe what they are doing or saying will be recorded or screenshotted.
  • Team Orange: Hailee, William, Barbara, Rahele, Jatarrion
    • "The Rotten Tomatoes Trend": If a movie has a low score on the movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, audiences tend to avoid that movie en masse. Examples: Suicide Squad, Pixels, or The Book of Henry.
  • Team Yellow: Kaity, Tahesin, Alex, Nick, Connie
    • The “Most interesting man in the world” - an effect where watching Dos Equis commercials makes me feel like I live a boring life without drinking beer BUT that I can suddenly be transformed into a radical badass by drinking Dos Equis
  • Team Red: Liz, Rob, Nicole, Eric, Michael
    • "Get in losers we're going shopping” or “Regina George” effect - the cause of watching a lot of popular movies or following popular memes then discussing them with your friends to such an extent that the words develop into your vocabulary. Then they become most of what you say and help you express your attitude in various situations. Example: from the movie mean girls, the famous quote “get in losers we’re going shopping” can be when friends get into your car to go places and because you have all seen the movie then you can reference it to each other as bonding.
  • Team Blue: Amina, Hunter, Jennifer, Halima, James
    • "The Trump Effect" - his use of Twitter to further polarize two opposing sides and stimulate a conversation nationwide (anything he hates, I love)
